Birmingham is unusual in how consolidated its grammar school entry is. The eight King Edward VI Foundation schools all use a single entrance test, so one registration and one sitting feeds every one of them. The test is multiple choice with no writing section, covering English comprehension, verbal reasoning, maths and non-verbal reasoning — and the weighting matters: English and verbal reasoning together carry half the marks, with maths and non-verbal reasoning a quarter each.

The timing catches families out every year. Registration closes in the June of Year 5 and the test is sat in the first weeks of Year 6 — roughly seven weeks before the 31 October secondary application deadline. Miss the June registration and the option is gone for that year, whatever the October date says. The Foundation also reserves a meaningful share of places for children eligible for Pupil Premium, and offers free preparation support to eligible pupils, which is worth knowing before paying for anything.

Birmingham's independent schools set their own separate papers — King Edward's School, for instance, tests English and maths only and has dropped verbal reasoning from its exam entirely. And underneath all of it the national assessments continue: the Year 1 phonics screening check, the Year 4 multiplication tables check, and KS2 SATs in the May of Year 6.
