Primary education in Guildford: what parents are actually navigating
One thing worth clearing up first: the Royal Grammar School, Guildford is an independent, fee-paying school — the 'grammar' is historical. Surrey has no state grammar schools at all, so selective entry here means independent school assessment, and the ISEB Common Pre-Test is the local norm, used by RGS, Tormead and St Catherine's among others. Guildford High School runs its own online assessment followed by an interview day.
Families who want selective state education look over the county boundary, most realistically to the Sutton schools. Their first-stage test is unusual in being two multiple-choice papers in maths and English only, with no verbal or non-verbal reasoning — quite different from the ISEB pre-test — and it is sat in the September of Year 6, with registration closing the previous summer. Some of those schools admit largely on rank order of score, others heavily prioritise a local catchment, so it is worth checking each school's admissions policy before committing to a year of preparation.
The two timetables pull in different directions: the independent season runs from October to January of Year 6, while the Sutton registration deadline falls the summer before. A family hedging both needs to be thinking about it in Year 5. Alongside that, the Year 1 phonics check, the Year 4 multiplication tables check and KS2 SATs in May of Year 6 all still apply.
