Primary education in Manchester: what parents are actually navigating
The single most common confusion here: the Manchester Grammar School is independent and fee-paying, not a state grammar school. There are no state grammar schools inside the Manchester local authority — the nearest are across the boundary in Trafford, which has seven.
Five of them share a single entrance test, provided by GL Assessment: two papers of roughly an hour each covering verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and maths, with no separate English comprehension or writing paper. It is sat in the September of Year 6, registration closes the previous June, and — unlike some areas — you register directly with the school rather than through the council. Two further Catholic grammar schools in Trafford test on their own separate date.
Geography is worth checking carefully, because some Manchester postcodes sit inside a Trafford grammar school's catchment: Stretford Grammar's catchment includes M15, M16 and M21, which are Manchester rather than Trafford addresses. Manchester's independent schools assess separately in January of Year 6, and the national assessments apply throughout — phonics in Year 1, multiplication tables in Year 4, KS2 SATs in the May of Year 6.
