Scotland runs an entirely separate system, and English-trained tutors who don't account for that are not much use. Primary is P1 to P7 under Curriculum for Excellence, organised by Early, First and Second Level rather than key stages. There is no clean mapping to English year groups either, because the cohorts are cut on different dates: depending on your child's birth month, P1 lines up with either Reception or Year 1 — and a spring or summer-born P7 pupil is the same age as an English child already in Year 7.

There are no SATs in Scotland, no Year 1 phonics screening check and no multiplication tables check. Instead children sit Scottish National Standardised Assessments in P1, P4 and P7 — online, adaptive, covering aspects of reading, writing and numeracy, with no pass or fail and nothing to revise for. Scotland also has no nationally mandated phonics programme, so we don't assume a P1 to P3 child has been taught through an English synthetic phonics scheme or knows its terminology.

Two other differences shape our sessions. Deferring P1 entry is common and socially normal here in a way it isn't in England, and has been backed by a further funded year since August 2023 — so a P1 class can hold a wide age range. And Edinburgh's independent schools assess for S1 entry in January, typically on maths, English and verbal reasoning, set by each school rather than through any national or consortium test. Scotland has no state grammar schools, and schools are inspected by HM Inspectors of Education, not Ofsted.
