Cambridgeshire has no state grammar schools — the county moved to a comprehensive system decades ago — so the 11+ in Cambridge means independent school entrance assessments. The Perse, Stephen Perse, The Leys and St Mary's all assess at 11, and there is no shared consortium test: The Perse, for example, uses a computer-based adaptive assessment in maths, English and reasoning, followed by a creative writing task, a group activity and a short informal interview.

Cambridge also has a structural quirk that catches new families out: most city state secondaries run from 11 to 16, with students moving to a sixth form college such as Hills Road or Long Road afterwards. Choosing a secondary school here doesn't decide where your child does A levels, which changes how parents weigh that decision.
