How the Curriculum for Wales differs — and what it means for tutoring
Wales has had its own curriculum since 2022, and it is genuinely different rather than a variation on England's. Key stages have gone, replaced by five Progression Steps that broadly correspond to ages 5, 8, 11, 14 and 16 — deliberately as reference points rather than year-group boundaries, because children are expected to progress at their own pace. Learning is organised into six Areas of Learning and Experience, with maths sitting inside 'Mathematics and numeracy' and English inside 'Languages, literacy and communication' alongside Welsh.
There are no SATs in Wales. Instead children take online Personalised Assessments in reading and numeracy, and they start much earlier than English parents expect — they are mandatory from Year 2 right through to Year 9, taken at least once a year at a time each school chooses. They are adaptive, so no two children see the same questions, which means there is genuinely nothing to revise for. Year groups themselves map one-to-one with England, so no conversion is needed there.
Welsh-medium education is a significant part of Cardiff's primary landscape, and it changes what tutoring should look like. In Welsh-medium schools, maths is taught through Welsh — so a child asked to work in English is translating as well as calculating — and formal English teaching typically begins later, with English becoming a mandatory curriculum element from age 7. Children often learn to decode in Welsh first, which is a far more regular written language than English. We take that into account rather than treating a Cardiff child as an English pupil who happens to live in Wales. Schools in Wales are inspected by Estyn, not Ofsted.
