There is no state grammar school inside the Leeds local authority — city secondaries admit on looked-after status, medical or social need, siblings, catchment and distance, with no test. But Leeds is different from most northern cities in that a state 11+ is genuinely available across the boundary: Heckmondwike Grammar in Kirklees, and Crossley Heath and North Halifax Grammar in Calderdale, all take Leeds applicants.

Those tests are sat in the September of Year 6 with registration in the preceding late spring or early summer. Heckmondwike's assesses English and maths through a mix of multiple choice and written response with a creative writing element, and usefully limits content to the KS2 curriculum up to the end of Year 5 — so it tests what a child has actually been taught, not what they are about to learn.

Two naming traps are worth knowing. The Grammar School at Leeds is independent, not a state grammar, and assesses online in maths, English and reasoning with an interview in January — it also runs a separate bursary shortlisting exam the previous autumn. And Prince Henry's Grammar School in Otley, despite its name, is a non-selective comprehensive. Underneath all of this the national assessments continue: phonics in Year 1, multiplication tables in Year 4, KS2 SATs in May of Year 6.
