    Primary Tutoring in Liverpool

At Nurturing Tutors, we provide online tutoring for children in Liverpool who need support in English and maths. Liverpool is one of the few cities outside the traditional grammar school areas where selective entry is a live option, and we help children approach it calmly rather than anxiously.

Families in Liverpool choose us because we build confidence first: reading fluency, core maths skills, and the belief that a child can improve. Our tutors adapt every session to your child's pace and to what's actually happening in their classroom.

If you're looking for a trusted tutor in Liverpool, our online sessions cover everything from early phonics to KS2 SATs and selective school preparation.

Primary education in Liverpool: what parents are actually navigating

Liverpool is unusual among northern cities in having a state selective school of its own. The Blue Coat School in Wavertree is a selective academy, and its entrance process runs in two stages, both taken online at the school: a first phase covering reading, spelling, general maths, mental arithmetic and developed ability, sat at the end of Year 5, followed by a second phase for those who qualify covering verbal, numerical and non-verbal ability at the start of Year 6. Up to 27 places are reserved for the highest-scoring applicants eligible for free school meals.

Registration for that first phase opens in the spring of Year 5, and the window has moved by several weeks between recent years — so check the school's own site rather than relying on last year's dates. Beyond the city, Wirral has six grammar schools. Four admit through the Wirral Admissions Test, two papers on a single day covering verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and maths, registered in Year 5 and sat in mid-September of Year 6; two Catholic grammar schools run their own separate tests. Children living outside Wirral can register, but then apply through their home authority naming the Wirral school.

Liverpool also has notably heavy faith-school provision across both primary and secondary, which shapes catchment choices in a way newcomers don't always expect, and the city allows three primary preferences and five secondary. The national assessments apply throughout: phonics in Year 1, multiplication tables in Year 4, KS2 SATs in the May of Year 6.
