York has a structural feature that shapes primary life here more than selection does: the city operates an infant and junior split, and admission to junior school is not automatic. Parents make a separate application for Year 3 while their child is in Year 2. It surprises families moving into the area, and it means Year 2 carries a transition that most of England doesn't have.

There is no state grammar school in the City of York and no 11+ within the city. The nearest is Ripon Grammar in North Yorkshire, which is co-educational and takes boarders, making it a genuine option for York families. Its test is two 45-minute papers — one on verbal skills including comprehension, spelling and verbal reasoning, the other on non-verbal reasoning and KS2 maths — registered by the end of June and sat in September. Registering for the test is not the same as applying to the school.

York's independent schools assess separately in January: St Peter's uses computer-based maths, English and reasoning alongside a creative writing paper and a group task, and prioritises its Year 4 entry point for York Minster choristers — an unusual selective route at age nine. Bootham, a Quaker school, sets its own entrance assessment and deliberately does not test children below Year 5 entry. The national assessments apply throughout: phonics in Year 1, multiplication tables in Year 4, KS2 SATs in the May of Year 6.
