    Bonfire Night Maths and Science: Learning in the Dark

    A qualified teacher turns one evening of fireworks into light, sound, data and writing practice for ages 7–11 — with a mandatory safety section.

    Bonfire Night, 5 November, gives you roughly twenty minutes of fireworks and an evening that's already dark by teatime — which is unusually generous for squeezing in real science and maths without anyone noticing they're learning. Light, sound, data, chemistry and descriptive writing all show up in a single display. Here's how to use it, plus the safety points that matter more than any of the activities.

    The history, told properly and briefly

    Bonfire Night marks the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes and a group of conspirators attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament and King James I. The plot was discovered, Fawkes was arrested guarding the gunpowder, and bonfires were lit that same night in celebration that the King had survived — a tradition that has continued, in one form or another, for over 400 years. Keep it brief and matter-of-fact with younger children; the historical detail can wait for Years 5–6.

    Light travels faster than sound

    Years 5–6 — measures, multiplication

    This is the single best piece of physics Bonfire Night offers for free. Light from a firework reaches your eyes almost instantly; the bang takes noticeably longer, because sound travels far slower — about 343 metres per second, compared to light's near-instant 300,000 kilometres per second. Count the seconds between the flash and the bang, multiply by 343, and you have a rough distance in metres to the firework.

    Try it for several fireworks across the display and compare distances — closer displays give a shorter, more countable gap, which makes this most reliable with a big local display rather than a single garden firework.

    Years 5–6 — materials, states of matter

    Firework colours come from metal compounds burning at very high temperatures: strontium burns red, copper burns blue-green, sodium burns bright yellow — the same yellow you see in some streetlights, which is a nice concrete link. It's a genuine introduction to the idea that different materials behave differently when heated, without needing to go anywhere near the words "chemical reaction" if your child isn't ready for them.

    Tally and graph the display

    Years 3–5 — data

    Before the display starts, agree on three or four colours or firework types to watch for. Tally each one as it appears, then turn the tally into a bar chart afterwards. This works for a big organised display or a single family in the garden with a small selection box — the maths is identical, just with smaller numbers.

    Onomatopoeia and sensory writing while it's fresh

    Years 3–6 — descriptive writing

    Straight afterwards, while the noise and smell are still vivid, ask for five words that describe what it sounded like, looked like and smelled like — encourage invented onomatopoeia rather than reaching for "bang" and "boom" immediately. "Fizzle," "crackle-pop," "whoomph" are all fair game. This is one of the few times all year that sensory writing has genuinely fresh material to draw on rather than an imagined scene.

    Budgeting a family bonfire night

    Years 5–6 — money

    If you're buying a selection box, sparklers, hot chocolate and marshmallows, hand over a fixed budget and the job of working out what fits. This is ordinary budgeting maths, but the stakes feel real to a child in a way that a worksheet total never quite manages.

    Firework safety, and children who find it overwhelming

    Fireworks are loud, bright and unpredictable, and some children — particularly those who are sound-sensitive or generally anxious — find the whole evening genuinely distressing rather than exciting. It's worth deciding in advance whether your child will watch from indoors, wear ear defenders, or skip the display entirely, and to say so without making it a big deal.     Safety, non-negotiable: always follow the Firework Code and the law on fireworks — keep sparklers at arm's length and never hand one to a child under five, wear gloves when holding a sparkler, never return to a firework that hasn't gone off, and keep pets indoors. If you're near a public display, consider ear defenders for younger or noise-sensitive children, and agree a meeting point in advance in case anyone gets separated in the dark and crowds.
